Grazing Platter vs Cheese Board vs Charcuterie Board
What's the Difference?

If you've ever searched for grazing platters, cheese boards, or charcuterie boards, you've probably noticed that the terms are often used quite interchangeably.

And honestly, that's understandable.

Over the years, "charcuterie board" has become a popular umbrella term for beautifully styled food boards on social media — even when the board may not technically include charcuterie.

I often receive enquiries for "charcuterie boards" when what people are actually looking for is a vegetarian grazing platter filled with cheeses, fruits, dips, crackers, nuts, and other gourmet accompaniments.

So I thought it might help to simplify the differences a little.

If you've ever wondered what sets a cheese board, charcuterie board, and grazing platter apart, here's a simple breakdown from someone who creates these professionally.

Cheese Board — The Purist's Pick

A cheese board is exactly what it sounds like. It's about the cheese. Period.

You pick a few good varieties — maybe a sharp cheddar, something creamy, something aged, something with a bit of character — and you lay them out with just enough accompaniments to let the cheese shine. Some crackers. A handful of grapes. A few walnuts. Maybe a drizzle of honey if you're feeling fancy.

That's it. No dips, no massive fruit displays, no salad sticks. Just cheese and its closest friends.

There's an elegance to a well-done cheese board. It's not trying to impress you with quantity. It's saying — here are four or five really good cheeses, take your time with them.

If you're having a couple of friends over with a bottle of wine and you want to keep things simple but still feel a bit special — a cheese board is the move.

Charcuterie — The Meaty One

Charcuterie is a French word, and it literally refers to the art of preparing cured meats. So a proper charcuterie board is built around meats — prosciutto, salami, chorizo, pâté, that sort of thing. The cheese is there, but it's sharing the stage.

You'll also find pickles, mustard, crusty bread, olives, maybe some cornichons. It's rustic, savoury, very European. The kind of thing you'd see at a wine bar in Paris or a tapas place in Barcelona.

Now, here's where it gets confusing. Somewhere in the last few years, "charcuterie" became the trendy word for any beautiful food arrangement. Dessert charcuterie. Breakfast charcuterie. I've even seen a "candy charcuterie" which — I'm sorry — is just sweets on a board.

But if we're being accurate, charcuterie means there's meat involved. If there's no meat, it's not really charcuterie. It's just a very well-styled board.

Grazing Platter — A Bit of Everything

This is what we do. And it's my favourite of the three, though I'm obviously biased.

A grazing platter is basically the "yes, all of it" option. You get cheese — multiple kinds. You get handmade dips like hummus and pesto. You get fresh fruits, crackers, pita bread, spiced olives, roasted nuts, dried fruits, salad sticks, and whatever seasonal extras feel right.

It's abundant. It's colourful. And it's designed to work for a group — everyone just gathers around and picks at whatever catches their eye.

The difference between a grazing platter and a cheese board is really about scope. A cheese board zooms in. A grazing platter zooms out. It's the wide-angle version — more variety, more colour, more food, more "wow" when it hits the table.

And unlike charcuterie, a grazing platter is naturally vegetarian-friendly. Which, if you're hosting in India, matters a lot. You don't want to serve a board where half your guests can't eat half the things on it.

A Quick Side-by-Side

So Which One Are People Usually Looking For?

In my experience — especially here in Delhi NCR — most people who message me saying "I want a cheese board" or "can you do a charcuterie board" actually want a grazing platter. They want the full spread. They want cheese, yes, but also dips and fruits and crackers and olives and all the bits that make a board feel generous and complete.

And that's totally fine. The labels don't matter as much as the experience.

But if it helps, here's how I'd think about it:

Cheese board — you're hosting 2–4 people, you want it simple and elegant, and you really want to focus on the cheese. Wine night energy.

Charcuterie — you want cured meats as the centrepiece, European cocktail party vibes. Not our thing since we're vegetarian, but if that's your scene, there's no shortage of options out there.

Grazing platter — you're hosting anything from an intimate dinner to a big birthday bash, you want variety, you want it to look incredible on the table, and you want everyone to be able to eat everything on it. This is what works best for most Indian gatherings, honestly.

Why Grazing Platters Work So Well for Indian Gatherings

One thing I've realised while curating platters is that Indian gatherings naturally lean toward variety.

People enjoy:

That's exactly what grazing platters offer.

Whether it's birthdays, intimate dinners, festive hosting, girls' evenings, wine nights, baby showers, or corporate gatherings — grazing boards fit beautifully into almost every occasion.

Where It All Blurs Together

The reality is, modern grazing platters borrow from all three traditions. Our boards have a cheese-board-quality cheese selection, the savoury depth you'd find on a good charcuterie board (minus the meat), and the abundance and visual impact of a classic grazing spread.

I think that's actually the best approach. Take the strongest elements from each, bring them together thoughtfully, and create something that doesn't fit neatly into one category — but tastes incredible and looks even better.

That's what we aim for with every board we build. Whether you call it a grazing platter, a cheese board, or "that amazing thing Shaguna made" — it's all the same to us.
